Why SCVS? (FAQs)

Why Families Choose SCVS

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Seminole County Virtual School (SCVS) is a public school within Seminole County Public Schools (SCPS) that provides online learning opportunities for students in kindergarten through grade 12. Students can choose from different enrollment options depending on their educational needs and goals. We are a franchise of Florida Virtual School (FLVS).

  • SCVS is part of Seminole County Public Schools and is staffed by Florida-certified teachers who serve our local community. SCVS offers flexible virtual learning options while providing access to local teachers and support.

  • Virtual learning offers flexibility, but students must be prepared to manage their time, complete assignments consistently, communicate with their teachers, and take responsibility for their learning. Families should consider their student's learning style, schedule, and need for support when deciding whether virtual learning is a good fit.

    • Full-Time SCVS: Students enroll in SCVS as their full-time public school and work toward meeting graduation requirements through the program. This is only open for enrollment during certain windows each school year.

    • Part-Time/FLEX: Students remain enrolled at their current public, private, or charter school while taking individual virtual courses. This option is always open. For more information, speak with your school counselor.

    • Home Education: Students registered with Seminole County Public Schools as home education students may take virtual courses through SCVS. This option is always open.

    • Scholarship/Contract Education: Eligible scholarship students may purchase individual courses through SCVS, subject to program requirements and fees. This option is always open.

  • Full-time enrollment requires an application during a designated application window. Families must submit the required documentation and complete the steps communicated by the SCVS enrollment team. Applying does not automatically guarantee enrollment. FLVS and SCVS both have specific enrollment windows. Please note that full-time is not the same as FLEX or Part-Time. Full-time has nothing to do with the number of courses you want to take; full-time means that you are withdrawing from any other schools, including Home Education, and you are going to apply to be part of SCVS as a school.

  • Yes. Full-time students must complete the application process each school year. Enrollment does not automatically carry over to the next school year.

  • Yes! Students who want to take individual virtual courses while remaining enrolled at their current school may qualify for the part-time option. Students should speak with their school counselor to determine which courses best fit their schedule and academic plan.

  • Yes! Students registered for home education in Seminole County may request SCVS courses. Families must complete the applicable home education registration requirements before requesting courses.

  • No. A student's enrollment status is determined by the program in which they are registered, not by the number of virtual courses they take. Part-time and home education students do not become full-time SCVS students simply by taking multiple courses.

  • Students complete lessons, assignments, assessments, and other course activities online. They work with their assigned teachers for instruction, feedback, and support. Course pacing and specific requirements depend on the course and enrollment option.

  • Yes. SCVS students are expected to make consistent weekly progress in their courses. Students should follow their course pace charts, submit assignments regularly, and communicate with teachers if they need help.

  • Students may be able to work ahead, depending on course requirements. However, working ahead does not eliminate the expectation for consistent weekly engagement and required teacher communication.

  • Yes. Students are expected to maintain regular communication with their instructors. SCVS requires monthly contact for students, with parent or guardian participation as outlined in school policy. Teachers use these check-ins to review progress, discuss pacing, and help students address challenges.

  • A DBA, or Discussion-Based Assessment, is an oral assessment in which a teacher discusses course content with a student to check understanding and mastery. Students should be prepared to explain what they have learned and answer questions about the material. Required DBAs must be completed as part of the course requirements.

  • Teachers monitor student progress and communicate with students and families when concerns arise. Students who fall behind should contact their teacher promptly and work together on a plan to get back on track. Continued inactivity or failure to meet course expectations may result in additional interventions or withdrawal, depending on the student's enrollment status and applicable school policies.

  • Return options depend on the circumstances of the withdrawal, the student's enrollment status, and applicable SCVS policies. In some cases, a student may be eligible to return under a Student Success Contract or may need to re-enroll under the applicable enrollment procedures.

  • Courses may count toward graduation requirements when applicable and properly included in a student's academic plan. Students should work with their school counselor or SCVS staff to confirm course requirements, credits, and graduation eligibility. All SCVS full-time students have courses that are putting them on a pathway towards graduation.

  • No. Part-time students remain enrolled in their home school, and home education students maintain their home education status. Taking courses through SCVS does not, by itself, make a student eligible for an SCVS diploma.

  • Students need reliable internet access, a computer that meets course requirements, access to email, and a working phone for communication. A webcam and microphone are also needed for required virtual meetings and assessments. Some courses may have additional technology requirements.

  • Requirements depend on the student's enrollment option and grade level. Full-time SCVS students have required live lesson expectations, while live lessons are generally optional for part-time students. Families should review the current requirements for their specific program.

  • For full-time applicants, a meeting may be required to discuss an IEP, Section 504 Plan, or English Language Learner (ELL) services. Students enrolled part-time continue to receive IEP services, supports, and accommodations through their school of enrollment.

  • Encourage your student to contact their teacher as soon as possible. Teachers can clarify assignments, provide feedback, and discuss available support options. Families should also monitor progress and communicate with the teacher when additional assistance is needed.

  • No, not at this time.

  • For full-time students, there will be on-campus requirements at each grade level. For part-time students, the courses are online. If your student is taking a course that requires any testing, that might be in person at SCVS or at your student’s school of enrollment. There are no in-person requirements for Home Education students or Contract Ed. students who are taking virtual courses.

  • SCVS has in-person Foundational Reading and Math courses for full-time students.

  • Yes. Full-time SCVS students should plan and expect to attend testing in person. If a full-time student is unable to attend required testing, they may not be eligible to return to SCVS in the future.

  • Yes. SCVS full-time has both clubs and field trips. We offer Art Club and STEM Club, to name a few. Our elementary students participate in the 4th-grade St. Augustine trip and additional field trips.
